Live Review : Steel Panther + Winger @ Academy, Manchester on May 17th 2023

Winger hit the stage with a blast from the past, reminding us why they were such a force during the glam-metal era. Bringing together all their original members in a rare display of harmony and unity, it's refreshing to witness a band reuniting without any lingering bitterness. It's also a rare treat to have 80's rock royalty grace the stage in Manchester, certainly as a support act, and as they move through their set they prove they've still got it.

The musicianship is tight as hell, with slick guitar solos, driving drumming, and a rumbling punchy bass. It's clear these guys have honed their skills over the years, delivering a high-energy performance that hits all the right notes. Kip Winger's vocals are absolutely phenomenal. His voice stands the test of time, effortlessly reaching those high notes and injecting the songs with emotion. Not only that, but he knows how to work the crowd, but you can’t help but feel that the crowd are eager for that full-on Steel Panther-esque banter. In fact, the crowd get a taste of what’s to come when Steel Panther’s Michael Starr makes a surprise appearance on stage.

But it’s when they unleash their familiar tunes, that the crowd goes wild. Sing-alongs, cheers, and a whole lot of nostalgia fill the air. It’s a solid celebration of their place in glam-metal history though, and when the band showcases their musical talent and Kip Winger's powerful vocals, they remind us of why they were such a force to be reckoned with back in the day. As expected from an 80's rock performance, there’s an abundance of plectrum flicking and throwing, a nostalgic gesture that fans still enjoy, and if you're a fan of the glam-metal era, a Winger gig will transport you right back to those glory days.

Headliners Steel Panther take to the stage and immediately have the crowd in the palm of their hand with ‘Eyes of a Panther’. These guys have their polarising unique appeal and niche, but they really do know how to rock and entertain their crowd. From the moment they hit the stage, they unleash a hurricane of energy and infectious humour that instantly engulfs the audience. Decked out in their flashy lycra-based glam-rock attire, they waste no time in getting the party started. The crowd is immediately captivated by their larger-than-life presence, and the room erupts into a frenzy of excitement. You can't help but be drawn into their world of outrageousness and nostalgia for the glory days of glam-metal.

Musically, Steel Panther prove they’re no joke as well. The guitar solos are mind-blowing, the drumming is thunderous, and the bass provides a solid foundation that keeps the groove moving strongly throughout. They flawlessly recreate that iconic '80s sound, reminiscent of rock legends like Motley Crue, Van Halen…and openers Winger. It's a pure sonic assault that transports you back to the heyday of hair-metal. Frontman Michael Starr commands the stage with his impressive vocal range, from powerful melodic screams to clean hooks, he effortlessly mesmerizes the crowd with his larger-than-life voice to match his on-stage character.

But of course, it's not remotely just about the music; it's totally about the experience. Starr and Satchel's witty banter between songs keeps the laughter flowing and the atmosphere pumped with irreverent energy. The crowd eats it up, eagerly lapping up every hilarious moment. In fact, a main highlight of the show is the band's incredible connection with the audience. Steel Panther know how to engage and involve their fans, making them an integral part of the performance. Whether it's encouraging sing-alongs, eliciting enthusiastic responses, or even bringing them on into the show, the band creates a sense of camaraderie and unity that enhances the overall experience. Yes, Steel Panther's humour, which is a core aspect of their act, may not be everyone's cup of tea. Their reliance on sexual innuendos and explicit content won’t hit the mark for many, but if you enjoy their satirical approach then you're in for a hell of a good time. If you're looking for a night of pure rock'n'roll madness, Steel Panther is definitely a band to put on the list.
