Bloodstock : 30 Bands Not To Miss - Square Wild
25. Square Wild – new bands stage – Some point on Friday.
You know that memo that says all metal bands wear black and gotta create music that fits that blackness, well Square Wild didn't get it (they will probably shopping in Affleck's Palace for psychedelic shirts). Winners of the Mancunian Metal 2 the Masses, theirs is a technicolour and transcendental take on prog rock. Do you remember those old fashion kaleidoscopes’ that we used to keep ourselves amused before the Xbox was invented? Theirs is the musical equivalent of one of them.
It's a swirling, pulsating maelstrom of euphoric colour put to music. Yes, is deliciously retro but it also manages to be steadfastly modern and forward thinking. So, if you tire of the monochrome and want something that is the aural equivalent of an LSD trip, then Square Wild will provide something which most definitely will tantalise your taste buds.
I just love Metal. I love it all. The bombastity of symphonic, the brutality of death, the rousing choruses of power, the nihilistic evil of black, the pounding atmospherics of doom, the whirling time changes of prog, the faithful familiarity of trad, the other worldlyness of post, the sheer unrefined power of thrash. I love it all!
