Live Review : Steel Panther + Winger @ Academy, Manchester on May 17th 2023

Winger hit the stage with a blast from the past, reminding us why they were such a force during the glam-metal era. Bringing together all their original members in a rare display of harmony and unity, it's refreshing to witness a band reuniting without any lingering bitterness. It's also a rare treat to have 80's rock royalty grace the stage in Manchester, certainly as a support act, and as they move through their set they prove they've still got it.

If the joke isn’t funny anymore then nobody has told the five thousand people queuing in a storm to get into the venue. This is the night we were warned to stay in, batten down the hatches and hold our children close, yet a sold out crowd has ignored the prophets of doom and ventured out into the night. Even the Man Citeh game was cancelled due to Storm Ciara but Victoria Warehouse didn’t care that there was at least an hour long queue to get into the venue. Seriously if you’re going to frisk everyone and check the contents of their wallets then get more staff on the doors. Perhaps use the security who go around the vicinity bullying punters into paying £10 to park on public land would be a start.

I first encountered Steel Panther at Download 2009, they were directly after my beloved Sabbat on the third stage back in the days before it became a pop punk refuge. I stuck around to see what all the fuss was about and found them to be perversely enjoyable, but also felt that their approach was very much a one trick pony and predicted that within the year their star would wane.
