Live Review : Daniel Tompkins + Novena @ The Deaf Institute, Manchester on January 27th 2022

Modern Metal is full of distinctive voices and this cracker of a tour celebrates two of them. Whilst TesseracT frontman Daniel Tompkins might be the main draw here, he has actually achieved quite a scoop in bringing along Ross Jennings of Haken’s side project Novena along for the ride. Jennings always seems a lot more relaxed with Novena than he ever does with Haken. This feels like his playground, where he can experiment and push his vocal cords in directions that the confides of his day job don’t allow.

It’s my first time reviewing at Victoria Warehouse, although I’ve seen plenty of stuff here as a punter, and as I join the long queue there’s plenty of anticipation for the great night of varied metal ahead. I catch our photographer Ryan before he’s able to use his photo pass to duck the queue (damn him!), but actually everyone is chatty and in high spirits for the night ahead despite having to stand around in the cold with COVID passports at the ready.

Welcome to Clash of the Titans: the polyrythmic, ever shifting time signatures edition. If you like your metal complex, intelligent and highly technical then this is probably the finest double header you will find. First out the gates are Between the Buried and Me and without wanting to get a reputation as the reviewer always moaning about the sound, Tommy Giles Rogers Jnr's vocals are just about audible. Now usually this would annoy the hell out of me but, truth be told, I would be gushing lyrically about Between the Buried and Me even if our Tommy did his entire vocal delivery via the medium of mime.
