Live Review : Vended + The Gloom In The Corner + Profiler @ O2 Academy 2, Liverpool on May 24th 2024

Vended are a band with a lot of weight on their shoulders, we here at Rockflesh have covered them on numerous occasions including their show at Rebellion and also at Sweden Rock festival, they have become somewhat of a favourite amongst our reviewers. It has become almost an obligation to mention that they are the products of absolute metal royalty, with 2 members having dads who play in Slipknot, as is apparent with their massive Iowa Era influence. Nepotism is part and parcel of music these days, and whilst some bands are almost stealing a living this way, there’s something different about Vended, despite them wearing their familial inspirations quite firmly on their sleeves.

Nickelback are the band that everyone loves to hate. Fact. Over the past 20 years, they’ve been the butt of all jokes and the subject of countless memes, all because the internet said so. Sure, they’re a little bit safe, a little bit corny, but a band doesn’t maintain their status as an arena band if they don’t have something about them that makes people want to attend their shows. Tonight, at Manchester Arena, they bring their Get Rollin’ tour, to prove to those in attendance that they still have it, even 25+ years into their careers.

When it comes to music, the French are having a pretty great time at the minute. They came 4th in the Eurovision Song Contest with an absolute stellar performance, Slift have released what many consider to be their album of year and Gojira are one of the biggest metal bands on the planet right now. Rise of the Northstar are the next band from our neighbours across the channel to represent their country when it comes to continuing this well received momentum. Donned in their trademark white Boiler Suits, the Hardcore/Nu Metal adjacent 5 piece have embarked on their Crank It Up Tour, making stops all across the UK and Europe.

Live Review : Orbit Culture + Defects @ Rebellion, Manchester on March 8th 2024

Orbit Culture have been touted as being “the next best thing” since “Nija” appeared during the pandemic days. Despite only just embarking on their debut headline tour, after 10 years of being a band, they have earned acclaim from the likes of Trivium and Machine Head. Having blown us all away opening for the former last August, they are very much a band on everyone’s lips. All bar a few shows on this inaugural UK/EU slog are sold out, and the ones that still have a few tickets to be snapped up, are sure to be at at full capacity come show day.

Live Review : Slift + Servo @ Gorilla, Manchester on February 24th 2024

To release an album of the year contender just mere weeks into the new year is one feat, but to follow it up with one of my most anticipated shows just a few weeks after that is quite the achievement. This seems like just another day at the office however for French 3 piece, Slift. Manchester Gorilla was rife with anticipation and despite Tesseract and Thrice occupying other venues across Manchester, the amount of punters who have turned out for the French 3 piece, is incredibly admirable.

Live Review : The Blackout + Dead Pony + Mouth Culture @ Academy, Manchester on February 19th 2024

When they first rose to prominence in the late Noughties, early 2010’s, The Blackout were following in the footsteps of an incredibly healthy and flourishing Wales Metal Scene. Bullet For My Valentine & Funeral For A Friend appealed to the Goths and Emo’s, Kids In Glass Houses & Neck Deep were the champions of the Alternative/Pop Punk Scene. The Blackout sat perfectly positioned right in the middle of this. Heavy enough to incite action in the pit, but with the song writing finesse and presentation to become bonafide idles to those who prefer things on the lighter side. Tonight, they are back. At least for now. After a triumphant return, performing their first show in 8 years at Download Festival, Sean Smith, Gavin Butler and Co. take The Blackout back out on the road for the first time in nearly a decade.

Live Review : Fozzy + The Hot Damn! + Pistols at Dawn @ Academy 2, Manchester on February 17th 2023

There comes a point in which most people decide to pick up a hobby outside of their usual day job to pass the time. Usually, they rely on relaxing, menial ventures such as fishing, brewing homemade ale, or getting a dog. This wasn’t enough for former WWE champion Chris Jericho, who in 1999 decided his extra curricular venture was to start a band and tour the world. This resulted in the formation of Fozzy. Initially an Ozzy Osborne cover band, Jericho along with Guitarist Rich Ward and then drummer, Frank Fontsere, moved away from dishing out covers and decided to focus on their own project and thus, the Fozzy we know today as born.

Live Review : Malevolence + Pain Of Truth + Rough Justice @ O2 Academy, Liverpool on February 12th 2024

Despite releasing their debut album, “Reign of Suffering”, almost 11 years ago, Malevolence have been on something of a meteoric rise over the past couple of years. I was first made aware of them during the 2021 Download Pilot event, in which they were positioned as one of the first couple of bands on the opening day of the event. For me, this was one of those sets that go down in Download Folklore. Malevolence and their trademark dose of sheer brutality provided the perfect antidote for those 10,000 lucky souls in attendance, who had been devoid of any form of live music for the best part of 18 months.

Live Review : Gorgoroth + Aeternus + Impalement + Aran Angmar @ Rebellion, Manchester on December 5th 2023

We are entering an interesting timeframe where bands that we consider rebellious upstarts and proponents of new blood are now celebrating landmark anniversaries. Gorgoroth are marking 31 years of hellish existence, not bad for a band that exists primarily to stick two-fingers up at the musical mainstream. To ensure that they are not supping bloodwine alone they have brought with them an impressive 3 bands undercard.

Live Review : Creeper + Save Face + The Nightmares @ Academy, Manchester on November 9th 2023

The Nightmares are a band destined to open for a band like Creeper. They fit the bill in every possible way to compliment the mystique and expectation of what a night with Creeper should be like. They are a dark, Gothic synth heavy indie pop band which whilst being a mouthful is the only way I can possibly describe them.

Live Review : Glenn Hughes + The Damn Truth @ Academy, Manchester on October 29th 2023

To be referred to as ‘The Love Child of Janis Joplin and Robert Plan’ brings with it a weight of expectation that for some bands could be considered too heavy of a burden to bear. For The Damn Truth however, they don’t want to just meet this expectation, they want to blow it out of the water, doing so with their dreamy, crushing and at times emotionally jarring blend of hard rock & Blues.

Live Review : The Dust Coda + Doomsday Outlaw + Luna Marble @ The Deaf Institute, Manchester on October 24th 2023

In my opinion, there is no genre of music that encapsulates pastiche more than that of the 21st century take on Classic Rock. The lack of innovation or desire for change and reliance on nostalgia and cliché leaves it feeling stagnant and ultimately uninspiring. Despite this, there is also an admirable and undoubtable demand for bands of this ilk from fans who want nothing more than to be transported back to a time when the humble guitar was king and simplicity was deemed innovative. Time waits for no one, and whilst the heroes of that bygone age may no longer be able to hold their own in 2023, the next generation of Classic Rock bands are here to pick up the mantle.

Live Review : Devils Henchmen + Ogun + Reclaim + Junta @ EBGBS, Liverpool on October 6th 2023

EBGBs is tonight packed wall to wall with enthusiastic metal fans here to eagerly celebrate the release of “The Deaf Choir” by tonight’s headliners Devils Henchmen. I believe it may be a sold out affair, and rightly so. The night promised to showcase some of the best and brightest rising stars of the Merseyside Metal scene and it did not disappoint.

Live Review : Better Lovers + Blanket @ Brudenell Social Club, Leeds on October 7th 2023

Brudenell Social Club is an institution, known across the nation as one of the remaining best independent venues for alternative music in the country. I've not been to a gig here for a few years now, but that feeling of familiar comfort mixed with excitement immediately hits as I walk through the door. It's been a crazy hot and sunny day, which made the matinee performance sweaty enough but, if anything, this evening it's a more intense heady mixture of humidity and anticipation.

Originally a supergroup comprising of members of Hardcore icons Turnstile & Trapped Under Ice, Baltimore collective Angel Du$t have undergone their fair share of lineup changes since its inception in 2013. Turnstile’s monumental rise from scrappy basement dwellers to the Grammy nominated mainstream behemoth they are today has meant that original Angel Du$t members Pat McRory and Daniel Fang have had to put their Angel Du$t commitments aside to fully focus on keeping the Turnstile Machine ticking on further.

Live Review : Trivium + Bleed From Within + Orbit Culture @ O2 Academy, Liverpool on August 29th 2023

After touring their latest album, “In The Court Of The Dragon” for the best part of two years, metal icons, Trivium, have took it upon themselves to wind down with a rather lengthy tour of the UK, dubbed the Goblins and Wizards tour. Taking place across 13 dates and covering cities and venues they likely haven’t played in years, this can be considered quite the intimate tour for a band who more often than not find themselves towards the top end of every festival poster they end up on.

For years now Don Broco have been slowly but surely rising through the ranks of the reliable, hardworking, quintessential British Band League Table. Jimmy’s Bar in Liverpool isn’t a venue I am able to say I’ve had the pleasure of visiting before, but my first impression is that it is the definition of a hidden gem. This bustling bar at the top of Liverpool’s Iconic Bold Street is the last place you’d expect there to be a Metal Concert, but one trip down into it’s basement reveals a venue that almost seems tailor made for this type of show.

Synthwave seems to be slowly embedding itself into the world of Rock & Metal these past few years. A relatively new genre of music that draws influence from both the music & neon lit cyberpunk-esque iconography of Sci-Fi and Horror Films of the 1980’s, it has been brought to the forefront of public consciousness by acclaimed acts such as Perturbator and Carpenter Brut.
